Post 2 Differential Diagnosis (Similar Conditions) for the Hallux Limitus & Rigidus Series

Hallux (Big Toe) Limitus & Rigidus Series

Part 2 – Differential Diagnosis (Similar Conditions)

To distinguish Hallux Limitus/Rigidus from other conditions, consider these 5:

1. Gout – Sudden, severe pain with redness and swelling due to urate crystal deposition (uric acid buildup leads to urate crystal forming and depositing).

2. Sesamoiditis – Pain localized under the first MTP joint (Big Toe Joint), without joint stiffness.

3. Hallux Valgus (Bunion) – Medial deviation of the hallux (Big Toe bending inwards) rather than restricted dorsiflexion (bending upwards).

4. Rheumatoid Arthritis – Bilateral joint involvement with systemic symptoms (both sides of the body is affected and there are overall body symptoms too).

5. Metatarsalgia – Pain under the metatarsal heads, not specific to the first MTP joint (pain under all the toes not just the Big Toe joint).

The Patient Perspective:

Patients with Hallux Limitus & Rigidus often experience:

– Chronic pain with activities like walking, running, or wearing certain shoes.

– Difficulty with daily tasks due to joint stiffness.

– Adaptations in gait (changing the way they walk to compensate), leading to secondary issues like knee, hip, or lower back pain.

– Frustration over limited treatment options, especially if conservative care fails.
