Hallux (Big Toe) Limitus & Rigidus Series
Part 8B Arch Height and Effects on Hallux Limitus and Rigidus
Now let’s go deeper into the custom orthotic recommendations for flat feet and high arch feet. Here are detailed recommendations for custom orthotic designs and footwear options to address Hallux Limitus & Rigidus for both flat feet and high arches:
1. Custom Orthotics for Pes Planus (Flat Feet) Design Features:
Arch Support: A medial arch support can help correct overpronation and stabilize the foot.
Heel Cup: A deep cushioned heel cup provides better control over foot pronation and absorbs shock.
First Metatarsal Cutout or Reverse Morton Extension: These can help relieve pressure on the first MTP (Big Toe) joint and enhance propulsion during gait.
Soft Forefoot: Use a soft, flexible material (e.g. EVA) under the forefoot to help with shock absorption and to prevent further joint stress.
Orthotic Materials: A shell that’s made of Polypropylene or EVA can give it a supportive structure and combined with a cushion layer of Poron or Sorbothane which can be great for cushioning and shock absorption under the heel and forefoot.
A shoe with a Rocker Bottom design: A mild Rocker Bottom can assist with toe-off and reduce stress on the first MTP (Big Toe) joint during walking.
2. Custom Orthotics for Pes Cavus (High Arches) Design Features:
Arch Fillers: Custom orthotics with fillers for high arches can improve foot function by stabilizing the arch and evenly distributing weight.
Cushioning: Use soft, shock-absorbing materials (e.g. Poron) under the forefoot and heel to reduce the impact on the first MTP (Big Toe) joint.
Heel and Forefoot Relief: Add soft cushioning around the heel and forefoot to manage pressure and prevent pain from excessive supination.
Metatarsal Pads: Incorporating metatarsal pads on the insole helps relieve pressure under the first metatarsal head and redistributes forces across the forefoot.
Orthotic Materials: A shell that’s made of EVA or Carbon Fiber can give it rigidity and support and combined with a cushion layer of Poron or EVA can help cushion high pressure areas.
A shoe with a Rocker Sole: A mild Rocker Bottom can assist with toe-off and reduce stress on the first MTP (Big Toe) joint during walking.
