Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Runner’s Knee) Series
Part 1 Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Runner’s Knee) What Is It?
Let’s look at Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Runner’s Knee)!
Commonly known as “Runner’s Knee”, it’s a condition causing pain around or behind the kneecap, often linked to abnormal tracking of the patella. Patients may experience aching, stiffness, or discomfort when climbing stairs, running, squatting, or sitting for long periods. This can lead to altered gait mechanics and stress on the lower limbs.
Causes include overuse, weak quadriceps, misalignment of the lower limb, or excessive pronation of the foot. Identifying biomechanical contributors is essential before beginning treatment.
Treatments
Treatments include shoe modifications, Custom Orthotics, and strengthening exercises. A coordinated approach with physiotherapists and orthotic specialists helps improve knee alignment and reduce pain.
1. Shoe modifications:
– Cushioned soles for shock absorption
– Supportive footwear for lower limb alignment
– Firm heel counter for stability
– Proper arch support
2. Custom Orthotics:
– Correct excessive foot pronation
– Improve lower limb alignment
– Reduce strain on knee joints
– Enhance gait mechanics
– Promote overall comfort
Note: Orthotic design depends on foot structure, degree of pronation, and activity level.
