Part 1 Iliotibial (IT) Band Syndrome What Is It?

Let’s look at Iliotibial (IT) Band Syndrome!

It’s a condition causing pain along the outside of the knee, often from inflammation of the IT band due to friction over the lateral femoral epicondyle (Lower Femur). Patients may experience sharp or aching pain during running or cycling, often worsening with activity. This can lead to altered gait patterns and compensatory stress on other joints.
Common causes include overuse, tight hip or thigh muscles, and biomechanical imbalances such as excessive pronation. Proper diagnosis and management are very important.

Treatments

Treatments include Custom Orthotics, shoe modifications, stretching, and strengthening exercises. The aim is to reduce lateral knee stress and improve lower limb function.

1. Custom Orthotics:

– Correct foot overpronation (if applicable)

– Improve alignment of the lower limb

– Reduce strain on lateral knee structures

– Promote overall comfort and enhance the gait mechanics

Note: Orthotic design depends on severity, foot type, and activity level.

2. Shoe modifications:

– Proper arch support

– Stable heel counter

– Shock-absorbing soles and overall cushioned shoes
