Functional Leg Length Discrepancy Series
Part 1 Functional Leg Length Discrepancy What Is It?
Let’s look at Functional Leg Length Discrepancy!
It’s a condition where one leg functions as shorter than the other due to biomechanical or postural factors. This makes it a Functional Leg Length Discrepancy, whereas if it was the bones being a different length, that wouldn’t be called a Functional Leg Length Discrepancy. Patients may experience lower back, hip, or knee pain and altered gait patterns. This can lead to fatigue, imbalance, and compensatory strain on joints during walking or standing. Causes can include pelvic tilt, muscular imbalances, or foot mechanics. Correct assessment is essential before treatment.
Treatments
Treatments include shoe modifications, Custom Orthotics, and physical therapy to address alignment and balance.
1. Shoe modifications:
– Heel lifts to correct leg length
– Cushioned shoes for shock absorption
– Proper arch support
– Supportive footwear for stability
2. Custom Orthotics:
– Address foot mechanics contributing to discrepancy
– Improve pelvic and lower limb alignment
– Reduce strain on joints
– Enhance gait symmetry
– Promote comfort and function
Note: Orthotic design depends on degree of discrepancy and activity level.
