Part 1 Bunions What Is It?

Let’s look at Bunions!

It’s also known as Hallux Valgus/Hallux Abducto Valgus (HAV) it’s condition where the big toe deviates laterally toward the other toes, causing a bony prominence (Bump) at the base of the toe. Patients may experience pain, swelling, redness, and difficulty fitting footwear. This can lead to altered gait, pressure on the forefoot, and discomfort during walking or standing. Bunions can develop due to problems with foot structure, tight footwear, biomechanical imbalances, or even genetic causes. Identifying the underlying cause is essential before beginning treatment.

Treatments

Treatments include shoe modifications and Custom Orthotics to reduce pressure and discomfort while also improving gait and alignment.

1. Shoe modifications:

– Wide toe box and extra depth to reduce compression on the bunion

– Soft, cushioned footwear for comfort

– Low-heeled shoes to reduce forefoot pressure

2. Custom Orthotics:

– Improve alignment of the first ray

– Offload pressure from bunion area

– Reduce pain during walking

– Improve overall foot mechanics and promote comfort and function

Note: Orthotic design may include medial wedges or padding to reduce stress on the bunion.
