Plantar Fasciitis Series
Part 4A Possible Treatments for Plantar Fasciitis
Let’s look at some possible treatments for Plantar Fasciitis.
Plantar Fasciitis involves both structural abnormalities and neurosensory hypersensitivity; treatment must target pain reduction and functional restoration. For individuals who stand or walk for long periods, appropriate footwear is essential to minimize mechanical load. The primary goal of orthotic therapy is to reduce strain on the Plantar fascia by stabilizing the medial longitudinal arch.
Conservative options: Icing, rest, activity modification, and anti-inflammatory medication.
Supportive devices: Heel cups, heel lifts, or taping.
Manual therapies: Physiotherapy or chiropractic modalities such as Active Release Technique, IMS, Graston, or deep tissue massage and/or registered massage therapy.
Medical interventions: Cortisone or steroid injections, shockwave therapy, ultrasound-guided prolotherapy, or surgical options (fasciotomy/fascial release).
Emerging approaches: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapies show potential for future use.
Key Focus: Address mechanical overloads, muscle tightness, and gait deviations to reduce stress on the fascia and prevent chronic symptoms.
For chronic or resistant cases, referral for progressive tissue rehabilitation and adjunct therapies (e.g., shockwave, manual therapy) is recommended.
