Part 1 Morton’s Neuroma What Is It?

Let’s look at Morton’s Neuroma!

It’s a condition involving thickening of tissue around a nerve between the toes, most commonly between the 3rd and 4th toes. This often causes sharp, burning pain in the forefoot, along with tingling or numbness in the toes. Patients may feel like there is something stuck in their shoe or a pebble under their foot. This can lead to nerve irritation, discomfort during walking, and avoidance of weight-bearing on the forefoot. Tight or narrow footwear and repetitive pressure can worsen symptoms.

Morton’s Neuroma is commonly caused by compression of the nerve due to footwear, foot structure, or biomechanical factors. Identifying contributing factors is essential before beginning treatment.

Treatments

Treatments for this can include things like shoe modifications and Custom Orthotics.

1. Shoe modifications:

–  Wide toe box to reduce compression (avoid tight or narrow shoes)

– Soft, cushioned soles

– Low heel height shoes (high heels can increase pressure on the forefoot)

2. Custom Orthotics:

– Reduce pressure on the affected nerve

– Provide metatarsal support to offload the forefoot

– Improve foot alignment and mechanics

– Decrease irritation during walking and give extra cushioning in forefoot area

Note: Orthotic design often includes metatarsal pads placed to relieve pressure around the affected nerve.
