Achilles Tendinitis Series
Part 1 Achilles Tendinitis What Is It?
Let’s look at Achilles Tendinitis!
It’s a condition where the Achilles tendon which connects the calf muscles to the heel, becomes inflamed or irritated. Patients often experience pain, stiffness, and tenderness along the back of the heel, particularly during activity or after periods of rest. This can lead to difficulty with running, walking, or climbing stairs, and may cause swelling or thickening of the tendon. Activities that involve repeated jumping or running often worsen symptoms.
Achilles Tendinitis can result from overuse, tight calf muscles, poor footwear, or sudden increases in activity. Identifying the cause is essential before beginning treatment.
Treatments
Treatments include shoe modifications, stretching, strengthening exercises, and Custom Orthotics. A coordinated approach with health professionals helps reduce tendon stress and improve function.
1. Shoe modifications:
– Cushioned heels to reduce impact and absorbs shocks
– Proper heel height for tendon relief
– Supportive shoes for foot alignment
2. Custom Orthotics:
– Correct foot mechanics to reduce tendon strain
– Improve alignment of the heel and ankle
– Provide cushioning and shock absorption
– Reduce overload during gait
– Promote recovery and comfort
Note: Orthotic design varies based on tendon load, foot structure, and activity level.
